Photo story: Haiti Mission Trip
- This photo story is my documentation of the people of Bwa Pen, Haiti during my mission trip in March of 2018. Our sponsor Polina Kadatska, professor of Global Development says that Southern Adventist University's curriculum emphasizes community-based global projects that focus on building sustainable relationships as well as improve and collaborate with indigenous groups in sharing information, resources, and vision. I wanted to see how this philosophy was put into effect in a third world country and what the outcome would be.
- The phrase "third world" is a Western imposition that implies some countries are worth less than others. However, this experience revealed that poverty is not just a lack of material things, but also rooted in broken relationships. We made it the goal to focus on creating those relationships by walking alongside the people of Haiti. Despite the fact that development is usually talked about in regards to a society or nation, we can individualize the concept starting in a small village as we had done in Bwa Pen.
- Development occurs when people are empowered and are given choices, and are offered training, education, and support. When the focus was aimed to support in the areas of construction, health, and education for the children, we began to see how these advancements came into practice. When young people are educated, they have access to potential employment and are empowered to make a difference. They can offer new solutions to old problems which is another ideology in global development. As the people in Bwa Pen saw how we were willing to come into their land and live among them, it motivated them to get involved in what we were doing. This created a great community amongst the missionaries and villagers during the time we spent there. The experience left all of us wanting to do more with people and make more of an impact, and that is the greatest outcome of global development in practice. Overall, this has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever been apart of and will forever treasure the memories and all the people encountered in my heart.
